He may look like Greek new-ager Yanni with a military haircut, but as is heavily underlined by the mega-patriotism of the title cut (not to mention the Ol' Glory album cover), Aaron Tippin is clearly an all-American country boy. While subtlety-lovers might be put off by the brashness of said title track, it's still leagues more user-friendly than similar odes to the eagle contemporaneously offered by the more hawkish likes of Toby Keith and Alan Jackson. Perhaps more importantly, Tippin doesn't belabor the point by spending the rest of album showing his red, white, and blue colors. Instead, he gets straight down to the business of honky-tonkin', waving a flag of a more Nashville kind on such title-says-it-all tunes as the roadhouse two-stepper "Honky Tonk If You Love Country" and the waltz-time saloon song "Five Gallon Tear." Things close out with a touch of soul as Tippin emotes with his deep voice on the ballad "Love Me Back," closing STARS & STRIPES on an appropriately hopeful note.
