Melody Maker (12/21-28/96, pp.66-67) - Ranked #26 on Melody Maker's list of 1996's `Albums Of The Year.'
Spin (7/96, pp.91-92) - 7 - Flawed Yet Worthy - "...STARS ON ESP conjures a Venusian honky-tonk (`Dub Love Letter'), an affair with Marshall stacks (the spiritual), and, on `Answer To Rainbow At Midnight,' an industrial disaster at a Chapel of Love..."
Q (8/96, p.120) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...Until now, Defever's cult-genius status lay in his ability to pluck unexpected fragments of beauty from the forgotten sonic debris of pop's past...With this album he sustains those moments into some gorgeous songs."
Melody Maker (6/22/96, p.50) - "...Full of ideas, STARS ON E.S.P. is the most amusingly derivative record I've heard in a while. Though the album brazenly appropriates a multitude of influences, it is both unusual and imaginative. And this is why I prefer HNIA to, say, Oasis..."
NME (6/22/96, p.56) - 7 (out of 10) - "...It is a collection of 15 cutesy-pie creations, mostly adorned by the tickled-kitten-tremblings of singer Karin Olivier....everything nips along at such a saucy pace..."
Entertainment Weekly (7/26/96, p.56) - "...Shameless but heartfelt, diffuse but focused, this album is an infuriating gem." - Rating: A
Alternative Press (10/96, p.88) - 4 (out of 5) - "...a spellbinding series of delicate, almost deliciously hesitant recompositions..."

Album Description

Combining alt-rock, dream pop, and quirky electronics, the long-lived Michigan band His Name is Alive was one of the only American acts (along with Ultra Vivid Scene and the Pixies) on the selective U.K. indie label 4AD. Like many of their labelmates, His Name is Alive presented an intriguing alternative to straightforward rock & roll, turning off the traditionalist rock path at every opportunity, and with rewarding results.
The band's fifth album, STARS ON E.S.P., was a definitive moment, uniting the disparate strands of their sound in a seamless, organic way. A healthy dose of acoustic guitars mixes with the atmospheric electric instruments to create a warm yet ethereal texture, and left-field synthesizer touches turn the whole thing joyfully on its head and tumble it into the stratosphere, where Karin Oliver's vocals swim dreamily over it all. The effect is one of a summit meeting between Stereolab, the Beach Boys ("Universal Frequencies" explicitly references "Good Vibrations"), and My Bloody Valentine on top of some snowy mountain peak.
