Nick Currie started his musical career in the early 1980s as the leader of the avant-garde band the Happy Family. In the mid '80s he changed his name to Momus, and became part of Creation Records' stable of quirky popsters. Soon even "quirky" became too small an adjective to describe Momus's freewheeling sound experiments, which fused electronica, rock, twee pop, easy-listening, and punk. He gained a large following in Japan, and made news in 1999 when he commissioned songs at $1,000 a pop from 30 patrons who were then commemorated in song on the album STARS FOREVER. Momus continues to release albums to a rabid fanbase at a steady clip, in addition to his visual art, blogging, and music journalism.
