Publisher's note

The creator of the unforgettable ôGirl from Ipanemaö tenor sax tone, Stan Getz, the son of Ukrainian immigrants, took his unique sound through five decades of swing, cool, bossa, and beyond. Covering Getz's teenage gigs with Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, and Stan Kenton, fame with Woody Herman, years as a masterful bandleader, and struggles with drugs and the law, this biography tells the bittersweet story of one of the most beloved jazz musicians. The book focuses on Getz's musical legacy, exploring the lightness of touch, lyricism, and warm glow that mark his sound. It also gives insight into his skills as a consummate improviser, capable of playing with a musical, tonal, and emotional range matched by few other musicians. 100 color and black-and-white photos are included in this in-depth look at the brilliant and varied musical achievements of Stan Getz.

Annotation

British musician, writer, and broadcaster Dave Gelly's musically erudite biography of Stan Getz, the saxophonist who for millions of fans embodied the bossa nova sound of the 1960s, is also a jazz tutorial, beginning with an instructive rundown of the history of the jazz saxophone and its first real practitioner, Coleman Hawkins. Getz was an admirer of the second generation of saxophonists led by Lester Young, starting his professional career at the precocious age of 15 in Jack Teagarden's band (for a time, the bandleader became his nominal guardian). Emerging as a bandleader in his own right in the early '50s, Getz alternated professional success with battles against drug addiction. His later interest in Brazilian music, sparked by a partnership with guitarist Charlie Byrd on the 1962 album JAZZ SAMBA, led to the breakout popularity of bossa nova when his collaborations with Joao Gilberto, like "Girl From Ipanema," became massive international hits. In NOBODY ELSE BUT ME, Gelly doesn't shy away from the flaws in the saxophonist's personal life; but, like the artist himself, he never lets Getz's addictions and sometimes questionable behavior interfere with his interpretations of the music.
