America's avant-neo-jazz movement leans heavily on a bluesy backbone. In France, there's a different kind of experimentation, one most certainly influenced by jazz geniuses like Charles Mingus, but also moving with the zany speed of Parisian culture. Stabat Akish's self-titled full-length is dizzying in this sense, particularly on almost cartoonishly frenzied, bass-propelled numbers like "Greed," which sound like what would happen if Les Claypool accessed his hippie spirit through jazz's controlled chaos. Which makes sense, because much of STABAT's rhythms seem to channel classic rock drama, whipping them in a blender of manic arrangements, and making for a pretty thrilling debut.
