Review

Entertainment Weekly (3/24/00, p.103) - "...bespeaks the pervasive influence of the Sex Pistols back in the day....Howard DeVoto's vocals have Johnny Rotten-esque sneer..." - Rating: B
Uncut (3/00, p.74) - 5 stars out of 5 - "...Four songs of joyful, mysterious, spidery anti-rock blasted out like delirious suicide notes....[The album] still carries the thrill of The 'Cocks heroic leap forward, and a generation's delighted amazement..."
The Wire (4/00, p.63) - "...[Their] long unavailable, kill-for-it 4 track EP released in 1977, on CD in all its Dexedrined, scratchy glory, but an urgency...rings through. No dull moment here..."

Title Note

Buzzcocks: Howard Devoto (vocals); Pete Shelley (guitar); Steve Diggle (bass); John Maher (drums).

This long overdue reissue of one of the crucial artifacts of first generation (1977) British punk is sure to gladden the hearts of aging hipsters everywhere, as it's lost none of its tinny, amphetamine charm. (As a matter of fact, in retrospect, it's now clear that the really crummy sound quality--which the Buzzcocks shared with most of their D.I.Y contemporaries, with the exception of the always well-produced Sex Pistols--was as much a part of punk's affront to the rock establishment as the music itself).

In any case, frontman Howard DeVoto spits out the lyrics here with a sneer worthy of Johnny Rotten himself, especially on the anthemic "Boredom," and guitarist Pete Shelley betrays an obvious acquaintance with Lou Reed's noisier solos from the first Velvet Underground album on the concluding "Friends of Mine." Seminal stuff, although their best work was yet to come.
