Fruit Bats Artist Snapshot:

Originally hailing from Chicago, the Fruit Bats feature an ever-changing lineup based around the folk-pop songwriting of bandleader Eric Johnson (not to be confused with the Eric Johnson from Archers of Loaf or the guitar virtuoso of the same name). Johnson began writing songs on his four-track in the mid-'90s before forming I Rowboat, a Velvet Underground-inspired indie rock band. From there, he slowly built a band, and after a well-received small-label debut, moved to Seattle and inked with Sub Pop, where they spent the decade.

While many acoustic-oriented indie bands of the early-to-mid-2000s ventured into neo-psych-folk realms in a precious, self-conscious

manner, sporting willfully wispy vocals, fairy-tale lyrics, and purposefully shambolic back-porch production, the Fruit Bats are a breed apart. The Chicago band manages to evoke the spirit of the Incredible String Band and other quirky hippie-era cult heroes without resorting to either retro gimmicks or faux-primitivism. Acoustic guitar, piano, scaled-down percussion, and plaintive vocals predominate on SPELLED IN BONES, but the album sounds completely contemporary. The songcraft and spare-but-spot-on arrangements all bespeak a level of effort beyond most ISB wannabes, and the overall sound has as much in common with Belle & Sebastian or the Decemberists as it does with any obscure '70s UK folk-rocker.
