Clifford Jordan Artist Snapshot:

Another fantastic Chicago tenor to burst out in the '50s, Clifford Jordan made his recording debut on Blue Note in 1957, in tandem with his high school acquaintance, the great John Gilmore (notable as well for being one of Gilmore's only two non-Sun Ra recordings). Jordan's busiest period came in the '70s, when he regularly toured Europe with a very fine quartet featuring Cedar Walton and Billy Higgins, and co-founded the consistently visionary Strata East recording label.

Title Note

Personnel: Clifford Jordan (tenor saxophone), Cedar Walton (piano), Spanky DeBrest, Albert "Tootie" Heath.

Clifford Jordan was a solid and too-often overlooked hard bop saxophonist, and 1960's SPELLBOUND was his fourth album as a leader. Originally released on Riverside, and reissued on OJC, the album features Jordan backed by bass, piano, and drums. Jordan intersperses readings of Charlie Parker's "Au Privave" and Billy Strayhorn's "Lush Life" among his original compositions, and the whole endeavor has an appealing, straightforward feel typical of the era. The saxophonist's versatile tenor skills, which range from the introspective to the rigorous, are on ample display.
