Title Note

Music composed by Richard Rodgers. Lyrics written by Oscar Hammerstein II.

Principal cast includes Mary Martin (Ensign Nellie Forbush); Ezio Pinza (Emile De Becque); Juanita Hall (Bloody Mary).

Principally recorded at Columbia 30th Street Studio, New York, New York on April 18 & 19, 1949. Includes liner notes by Marc Kirkeby and Theodore S. Chapin.

All tracks have been digitally remastered.

While the 1958 movie version of SOUTH PACIFIC would spawn one of the all-time biggest-selling soundtracks, the original 1949 Broadway version's significance should not be understated. The Rogers & Hammerstein play was an international sensation, introduced opera star Ezio Pinza to a newer, wider audience, and provided the sexy spectacle of Mary Martin in the shower singing the classic "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair." Indeed, Pinza's original version of "Some Enchanted Evening" remains the standard's definitive version, an almost surreal pairing of classical phrasing and pop majesty.
