Review

Dirty Linen (4/04, p.61) - "[R]ich and powerful music that will captivate adventurous listeners."

Title Note

The album's title is perhaps somewhat misleading. Some of the material here is oriented toward orishas and candomble, but there are also lullabies, Christmas songs, and some, such as "Salome," with more secular meanings. The music itself comes from Colombia's Atlantic and Pacific coasts, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Brazil -- a very complete South American tour. And it definitely does live up to the "black music" of the title. This is the sound of Africa in America -- just listen to "Curruloa Cantado" with its marimba and complex cross-rhythms. It might be from Colombia's Pacific coast, but its heart lies far away. And that's true of much of the music here. "Arullo San Antonio" might have a tune and words that come from Spain, but scrape the veneer a little, and underneath it's Africa. The whole concept of strong African culture remaining among the descendants of slaves has become common currency these days, but in 1968 no one had done research into the phenomenon, making this quite groundbreaking in the way it connected the dots between continents. The scholarly work might have gone beyond this, but the music remains as vital as ever, as does its importance. ~ Chris Nickson
