Shawn Mullins Artist Snapshot:

The '90s may go down in the rock n' roll history books as the decade of alternative rock, but many would agree that adult-oriented roots rock came in a solid second place, with the success of such artists as the Black Crowes, Sheryl Crow, the Wallflowers, Wilco, and Shawn Mullins. Mullins hit it big with his spoken/sung "Lullaby." He draws his influences from several notable singer/songwriters (chiefly Bob Dylan and Neil Young), painting interesting pictures of everyday life as lived by ordinary people.

"Lullaby (Rock-A-Bye)" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.

Though he's all made up for late'90s MTV exposure, Shawn Mullins turns out to be an old-fashioned troubadour at heart. Sure, there are hip-hop inflected drum loops, tastefully retro-sounding keyboards and stylish, artful string arrangements, but Mullins' main concern is chronicling his experiences and observations as he moves through a complex, confusing world. Most of the songs are based on acoustic guitar underpinning, and Mullin's appealing drawl is at the center of it all, delivering lyrics full of careful detail from his traveler's bag of tunes. The liner notes even give details of where and why some of the songs were written, a sure sign of a man with itinerant balladeer blood. Hell, there's even a decent cover of Kris Kristofferson's "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down," what more do you want? Did we mention that Mullin's isn't afraid to get funky? There's more to SOUL'S CORE than just a flavor-of-the-week mindset. Try it and see.
