In the early and mid-1970's, while Weather Report, Miles Davis, and select others were searing the stratosphere with their brand of fusion, others took a different approach entirely. Saxophonist Grover Washington Jr.'s brand of fusion was more romantic--groove-oriented, funkier, and melodious--and, in its own manner, just as creative as the aforementioned. In 1973, at the time of SOUL BOX, Washington possessed a tone that was as soulfully gritty as it was gregarious and tender. Some of the very best fusion players with a feel for funk are present here--drummers Idris Muhammad and Billy Cobham, guitarist Eric Gale--and the orchestral arrangements (by Bob James, no less) actually enhance the small group performances rather than merely sweeten them. Most tracks are eight minutes in length and longer, giving everybody enough room to stretch-out and shine while still maintaining the groove.
