Review

Down Beat (6/00, p.66) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[His] piping tone, legato attack and speedy navigation of modern changes suggest Wayne Shorter, Michael Brecker and, at time, Stan Getz, but his advanced sense of group composition is personal...,his beautiful 'Song For A New Day' has a high-folkiness..."
JazzTimes (3/00, p.107) - "...establishes Frahm's credentials as a blustery modern tenor saxophonist....showing off his full soprano sound hansomely....Good playing from all hands throughout this album."

Title Note

Personnel: Joel Frahm (soprano & tenor saxophones); David Berkman (piano); Doug Weiss (bass); Matt Wilson (drums).

Recorded on September 22, 1998. Includes liner notes by Joel Frahm.

Saxophonist Joel Frahm is truly a rare breed: his playing is strong and passionate yet always highly listenable. While he isn't afraid to explore the outer fringes of the modern spectrum, his acute sense of taste allows him to keep a firm grip on the inherent beauty of the music. His debut as a leader, SORRY NO DECAF, displays these qualities admirably. Showcasing his strengths on both tenor and soprano horns, Frahm is joined by label mates David Berkman on piano and Matt Wilson on drums as well as bassist Doug Weiss.

The aptly titled "Smokin' Joel" starts things off with a rollicking ride through a set of bouncing changes that Frahm and company devour impressively. Other tracks penned by the saxophonist such as the gentle "100 Years In Motion," the shining "Song For A New Day" and the quirky title track illustrate his mature compositional prowess. The most intriguing cut is the comically titled "Interesting Perhaps, But Hardly Fascinating Rhythm," featuring spirited solos by Frahm and Wilson. Closing the set are Frahm's interpretations of two wonderful standards--the murky rumba of "Soul Eyes" and a delightful reading of "Pennies From Heaven."
