Review

Down Beat (3/97, p.59) - 4 Stars (out of 5) - "...boils down the popular BLANTON-WEBSTER BAND and BLACK, BROWN AND BEIGE three-CD sets to a single disc....a chronologically organized selection of some of Duke's best and most widely known versions of `Take The `A' Train,' `The `C' Jam Blues,' `Caravan,' and `Mood Indigo' (among others) recorded in the years '40-'46..."

Title Note

Personnel includes: Duke Ellington (piano); Ray Nance (vocals, trumpet); Ivy Anderson, Herb Jeffries, Kay Davis, Joya Sherrill, Marie Ellington, Al Hibbler, Marian Cox (vocals); Johnny Hodges, Harry Carney (saxophone, clarinet); Ben Webster, Otto Hardwick, Russell Procope (saxophone); Cat Anderson, Shelton Hemphill (trumpet); Joseph "Tricky Sam" Nanton, Juan Tizol (trombone); Barney Bigard (clarinet); Billy Strayhorn (piano); Fred Guy (guitar); Oscar Petitford (bass); Sonny Greer (drums).

Recorded between 1941 and 1949. Includes liner notes by Stephanie L. Stein.

The question when faced with a catalogue as enormous and diverse as that of Edward Kennedy Ellington is "Where to begin?" Though the answer is always a matter of personal taste, you could do much worse than RCA Victor's excellent compilation SOPHISTICATED LADY.

These 19 tracks focus on the '30s and '40s heyday of Duke Ellington and his orchestra, when Ellington and musical partner Billy Strayhorn were tossing off timeless jazz masterpieces as quickly and effortlessly as Lennon and McCartney wrote classic pop songs a generation later. Those standards are well accounted for here, from Ellington's theme song, "Take the A Train"; to Cootie Williams' trumpet showcase "Concerto for Cootie"; to trombonist Juan Tizol's "Caravan"; to a clutch of perfect gems like "Prelude to a Kiss," "Mood Indigo," and the definitive version of the title track.
