Psychologist Robert Gass and his choral group On Wings of Song occupy a unique place in the widening field of recorded chant. Where many popular Kirtan leaders and chant aficionados lean toward tribal rhythms, exotic instrumentation, and charismatic vocal improvisation, Robert Gass favors steady, soothing tempos and simple acoustic accompaniment. Although Gass and others take the occasional solo vocal turn, the sweetly blended voices of the choir remain in the foreground. Their cohesiveness models a universal harmony appropriate for this collection of healing songs. "Universal" also describes the song choices. Gass puts his own gentle spin on songs by Sandy Denny, the Who ("See Me Feel Me"), and Carly Simon, as well as some traditional songs from the yogic, Buddhist and Catholic traditions.
