Michael Hearst is one half of One Ring Zero, a band that made a name for itself among literati by releasing an album with lyrics solicited from some of America's best writers. SONGS FOR ICE CREAM TRUCKS is Hearst's first solo outing, and makes good on its title by offering up a collection of tracks tailor-made for--yes--ice cream trucks. With a couple of exceptions, the album is entirely instrumental, and the tunes are bright, chipper ditties played on accordion and lo-rent synth. The disc has its share of charm, but the most remarkable thing about it is its realism: this music really could blast from ice cream truck speakers, evoking all the nostalgia of a summer afternoon and a soft-serve cone.
