Mesh Match For "Songs Of A Dead Dreamer" CD by DJ Spooky:

DJ Spooky Artist Snapshot:

Paul D. Miller, better known as DJ Spooky, was at the forefront of a new movement in DJ culture and electronica in the 1990s in New York City. Purveying a self-described "illbient" aesthetic, he merged hip-hop, dub, dance music, reggae, jazz, the avant-garde, and more. His work blurred the lines not only between genres, but between mixing and performance. A cultural theorist as well as a musician, Spooky's writings have been published in both essay and book form. In addition to his solo projects, he's collaborated with everyone from electronic experimentalist Scanner to neo-classical string players the Freight Elevator Quartet.

Review

Spin (8/96, p.104) - "...derivatively symphonic, though the punkishly minimalist repetitions create suspense..."
Alternative Press (10/96, p.83) - 4 (out of 5) "...a modern oracle, he presents his visions without overt illustration of their import...refracting the sonic sensations of a modern urban experience...[giving] fresh meaning to the tired concept of enviromental music..."
New York Times (Publisher) (7/2/96, p.C11) - "...D.J. Spooky picks up sounds and samples with open ears, from gospel organ to Debussy's `Syrinx' to jazz violin to what might be Central African flutes....Yet D.J. Spooky has his own sonic realm, dank and multifarious and unmistakably urban..."

Title Note

Personnel includes: DJ Spooky (turntables); Arto Lindsay (guitar); Mica (saxophone).

With this 1996 release, New York-based Spooky (AKA Paul D. Miller) was introduced to the world at large. He came out of a NY DJ scene that included such turntablists as DJ Olive, who allegedly coined the phrase "illbient" to describe Spooky's mix of floating, ambient textures with darker, more urban elements. DEAD DREAMER is a tour de force. Spooky combines spacey atmospherics with the distant clanging of a faintly heard metropolis that exists somewhere on the outskirts of the listener's ear.

Despite Spooky's emergence from a grassroots DJ culture, DEAD DREAMER is far from dance music, better suited to expansive contemplation or Zen-like immersion. Unlike RIDDIM WARFARE, with its guest rappers and more upfront production, DREAMER's sound is a subtle one, unified by a prominent dub aesthetic, and Spooky's own reggae-informed basslines.
