Review

Q (8/99, p.136) - 3 stars (out of 5) - "...Steamily up-to-date, R&B sensible orchestration and George Harrison's title song [does] the trick..."

Product note

An extra song, "Fool On The Hill," is featured on this remastered Dutch re-release of the 1970 album.
A belated and much appreciated reissue of one of the Welsh-born cabaret star's finest albums, 1970's SOMETHING is a delight. Where many middle of the road pop singers always seemed uncomfortable with rock & roll, Shirley Bassey's brassy, booming voice always seems to indicate a rock & roll heart beneath all the orchestral arrangements.
The pop songs she chooses here run from the anticipated "Spinning Wheel," which she simply nails, to surprising and obscure choices like the sublime heartbreaker "Yesterday I Heard the Rain," and the Doors' "Light My Fire." Bassey entertainingly plays up the Vegas shtick implicit in Morrison's song.
