Review

Rolling Stone (p.126) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "Elizabeth Powell's sultry howl is like a stiff drink: icy, not too sweet and capable of knocking you on your ass."
Spin (p.96) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he spotlight stays on charismatic Elizabeth Powell, who grinds out chunky guitar noise as she attacks the mic with a slow-burn drawl that suggests Lucinda Williams fronting a power trio."
Mojo (Publisher) (p.118) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "It's heartbroken powerpop, with Powell recalling Chrissie Hynde in every crack and croon of her vocal, a Phil Spector heroine fronting a tenderly squalling indie rock group."
Clash (magazine) (p.111) - "[W]hile it's bleak, with the title track being properly heartbreaking, it's never less than compelling....A tight, powerful set of songs."

Title Note

Composer: Elizabeth Powell.

Land Of Talk: Elizabeth Powell (vocals, guitar, violin); Justin Vernon (vocals, guitar, organ); Chris McCarron (vocals, bass guitar); Randy Pingrey (trombone); Andrew Barr (drums).

Personnel: Mark Wheaton.

Recording information: Petite Iglise.

Arrangers: Chris McCarron; Mark Wheaton.

The second album by indie rockers Land of Talk is a compelling set of slow to mid-tempo tunes suffused with layers of hazy guitars and topped by Elizabeth Powell's homespun, careworn vocals. Powell has a bit of a countrified twang to her voice, but the laid-back shimmer of songs like "Death By Fire" and the title track owes more to Yo La Tengo or Galaxie 500 than the alt-country scene.
