Swedish singer-songwriter Loney, Dear--real name Emil Svanangen--signed with the U.S. indie label Sub Pop in late 2006 after a CD-R of his homemade recordings fell into the hands of an employee at the label. If that sounds familiar, it should be. The same once-in-a-lifetime opportunity also occurred for Svanangen's fellow Swede Jens Lekman. The two also share a melancholy, folky pop sensibility that has invited comparisons to Brian Wilson, Jose Gonzalez, and U.S. wunderkind Sufjan Stevens. The increased exposure of Loney, Dear's Sub Pop debut, 2007s LONEY NOIR, led to the album being licensed in the U.K. by the major label Parlophone. Svanangen played all the instruments on every song on the album.
