"I dedicated this album to Pascal Negre, who...asked for 'Un bolero por favor'," Nana Mouskouri writes in the liner notes to Un Bolero por Favor, her tasteful collection of Spanish-language classics. Negre is the head of Universal France, which Mouskouri records for. More than anyone, he understands the international appeal of Mouskouri, whose career has spanned four decades and numerous languages. Un Bolero por Favor itself is a pleasant collection of songs in the bolero style, with exquisite instrumentation throughout supporting Mouskouri's expressive vocal style. Her version of "Besame Mucho" begins with an intimate a cappella, which is joined by a gentle requinto lead and quietly strummed harmony guitar. The guitars remain evocative through the entire album, adding color to "Usted" and the upbeat mambo of Bobby Capo's "Piel Canela." Mouskouri can sing in a lover's whisper or the vibrant strides of a bandleader, and she does both to great success on Bolero. Standouts include a modernistic take on "Me Voy Pa'l Pueblo," as well as the introspective "No Me Quieras Tanto." Un Bolero por Favor is a treat for any Mouskouri fan who wants to hear the vocalist captivate in yet another musical style. ~ Johnny Loftus
