Old-school rapper KRS-One has been a practitioner of uncompromising hip-hop since most of today's rap stars where in short pants. He has no qualms about reminding us about his place in history, as "Attendance" begins with a list of our man's innovations in his chosen field. Released at a time when rappers of varying quality seem to pop up out of the woodwork every other week, THE SNEAK ATTACK represents a kind of retrenchment that's sorely needed; a commitment to the kind of lyrical skills and fierce intensity that made KRS-One a hip-hop legend to begin with. Throughout this disc, KRS-One takes newcomers to task and makes a case for his own status as a true O.G. The beats are basic, and the tracks are accordingly simple and straightforward, all the better to leave room for the unfettered vocal fury of KRS-One as he restates his claim to the hip-hop throne.
