Like P J Harvey and Alice Cooper, Reverend Horton Heat is a band, although singer/guitarist/guiding light Jim Heath also goes by that moniker. The trio's music centers on Heath's lupine punkabilly guitar riffs (including his trademark "Hurricane" lick, on which he plays lead and rhythm at the same time), charismatic vocals, and funny lyrics. The band started out in the mid 1980s, and their sweaty, famously over-the-top live shows attracted the attention of Sub Pop, who released their first two acclaimed albums. The band was picked up by Interscope for their next three albums and dropped by the end of the millennium, after which the reverend and his boys made their own indie way.
