Review

JazzTimes (12/99, p.142) - "...Joyful, imaginative, artful, fun stuff. The title says it all."

Title Note

Personnel: Matt Wilson (vocals, drums); Joel Frahm (vocals, soprano & tenor saxophones); Andrew D'Angelo (vocals, alto saxophone, bass clarinet); Yosuke Inouye (vocals, acoustic & electric basses).

Recorded at Maggie's Farm, Pipersville, Pennsylvania on March 2, 1999. Includes liner notes by Jim Macnie and Matt Wilson.

To say that drummer Matt Wilson is an original, eclectic artist is fair. However, the word that best describes Wilson's approach to modern improvised music is "fun." Indeed, Wilson's third release for Palmetto, the aptly titled SMILE, is an enjoyable hoot. That is not to say this isn't seriously complex music. What makes it such a treat, though, is Wilson's quartet's obvious accessibility and sense of the absurd permeating even the darkest of material. The listener is not kept at a distance, but invited to join in their delight of performing such creative music.

From the opening barrage that begins "Wooden Eye," the group turns cacophonous noise into a slow bluesy shuffle that could raise the dead. The most programmatic piece, "A Dusting Of Snow," is full of subtle intricate quirks and spins despite its murky quality. Turning the tide completely is the raucous "Big Butt" which has to be heard to be understood. Even standards find their way into the quartet's off-kilter scope as Coltrane's "Grand Central" and the classic "Strangers In The Night" get unusual re-workings. Other delightful jaunts include "Making Babies," the bizarre "Go Team Go!" and "I've Found A New Baby."
