On their fourth full-length, SMASH THE CONTROL MACHINE, OTEP hones their all-encompassing metal-rap approach into a scathing indictment against the forces of corruption that fostered the late-'00s economic crisis. Lead vocalist Otep Shamaya is a shamanic presence here, channeling the energy of her mystical, sex-magic poetry into politically charged spoke-sung diatribes.

It seems this band has an every-other-album record of cranking out a great album and following with a lame one. Sevas Tra blows you away start to finish. House of Secrets is mundane, lost in sloppy production. The Ascension has killer songwriting and musicianship. Now this boring, by the numbers STCM. I am an Otep fan, dont get me wrong. But STCM lacks both the multiple riff-based music their other successes are based on, as well the interesting vocal and lyrical content. She touches base on three of the tracks here. The rest are either boring exercises in songwriting typically reserved for bands that are nearing the end of their careers, or overindulgence into the ethereal. Otep S. has some great poetry and lyrics in her past, but it can be concluded that this album is a rushed effort. STCM proves highly disappointing for longtime fans, disinteresting for newcomers. Shame on you Otep, Evil J, and Ulrich Wild: you are much better than this. Looking forward to the next (every other) masterpiece!
