SKY & COUNTRY is the ECM debut for FLY, the trio of saxophonist Mark Turner, bassist Larry Grenadier, and drummer Jeff Ballard. While it's not exactly easy listening, there's nothing forbidding here either. Each selection is somewhat lengthy but there's a fine group dynamic at work--FLY lets each composition logically unfold while avoiding excess or self-indulgence. Tenor (also soprano) saxophonist Turner is mainly lyrical-minded, his tone descended both from the dry, lithe approach of Warne Marsh and the surging Wayne Shorter. For their part, Grenadier and Ballard provide plenty of forward motion as well as thoughtful nuances. Not a disc for jazz novices, but for devotees of the power trio format, SKY & COUNTRY is a compelling listen.
