Review

Rolling Stone (3/16/72, p.56) - "...Each writes excellently, and their two voices blend with such ease that you'd think they'd been harmonizing together all their lives....A polished, melodic album packed with good material and inventive musical touches..."

Title Note

Loggins & Messina: Kenny Loggins (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Jim Messina (vocals, guitar).

Additional personnel: Lester Garth (violin, recorder, saxophone, steel drum, background vocals); Michael Omartian (concertina, keyboards, steel drum); Jon Clarke (oboe, saxophone, steel drum); Larry Sims (bass instrument, background vocals); Merel Bregante (drums, background vocals); Milt Holland (percussion).

Jim Messina did much more than "sit in" on the first Loggins & Messina record. Originally supposed to just lend a hand, the former Buffalo Springfield bassist and founding member of Poco ended up contributing much more, acting as producer, singer, guitarist, songwriter, and mandolin player. Messina's increased role on what was initially a Kenny Loggins album led to one of the most successful songwriting partnerships of the '70s.

The creamy-voiced Loggins takes the lead on two of the record's most enduring numbers, "Danny's Song," later a Top 10 hit for Canadian chanteuse Anne Murray, that ranks among the definitive love ballads of the decade. And on the unabashedly sentimental "House at Pooh Corner," Loggins tunefully yearns for "the days of Christopher Robin and Pooh" in a way, one suspects, a guy could only get away with in the early 1970s. "Vahevala," Loggins & Messina's contribution to the sailor-song genre recently made popular by bands like Grand Funk and one-hit wonders Looking Glass, ranks among their most beloved tracks. Among Jim Messina's strong contributions is a medley of songs that culminates in the compelling, gospel-tinged "Peace of Mind."
