Review

Spin (p.104) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "For sheer dance-floor energy and disco kinks, ex-!!! percussionist John Pugh and fashion designer/vocalist Madeline Davy don't disappoint."
Alternative Press (p.164) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "The disc is highlighted by the scratchy, cacophonous 'Quick And Painful' and the smoky, bottom-heavy cabaret strut 'Never Hear Surf Music Again.'"
Blender (Magazine) (p.64) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he beats have rollicking, primal kinetics that most digital-era grooves lack."
Clash (magazine) (p.85) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[They] delve into a disheveled, occasionally sinister, and more often infectious new cross-breed of leftfield dance, art-damaged funk and early '80s disco."

Title Note

Free Blood: Madeline Davy, John Pugh.

Personnel: Molly Schnick (cello); Alan Astor (saxophone); Eric Emm (wood block).

Arranger: Joshua Ryan.

After !!! drummer John Pugh departed that percussive outfit and joined forces with designer Madeline Davy, he immediately escaped the former band's shadow with a familiar-but-distinct brand of electro-dance-punk-funk. The early Free Blood material, released as a series of singles and remixes, has been compiled into this proper full-length of sorts. What's so alluring about THE SINGLES is its intelligent spanning of early '80s New York funk, turn-of-the-century club-punk, and the DFA-inspired electro-fusion of both styles. Yes, it risks redundancy when there are three versions of the same track, but when they're as inventive as the trio of "Royal Family" offerings (especially the glitchy, sultry "Brothers Mix"), it's hard to complain when you should just be dancing.
