The Handsome Family, essentially a husband-and-wife duo of Brett and Rennie Sparks, started out in the mid-1990s as part of the Chicago alt-country scene. They specialize in moody, gothic-tinged songs full of macabre, old-world imagery influenced by early country and folk music. Rennie's delightfully creepy lyrics are delivered by Brett in a deep, resonant, Johnny Cash-like voice for maximum impact. Despite their traditional roots, though, the Handsome Family still incorporate modern influences in both their lyrics and production approach, and have earned a significant cult following.
2003 album for husband & wife duo featuring 13 songs about Wal-Marts, lovers who chase the fire in the streetlights, the madness of very deep holes, a lake that can be visited in dreams, and the shadows that whisper inside a modern, office building. It is the Handsome Family's 6th CD with Carrot Top Records. Lyrics included in the sleeve.
