Annotation

For 11 years at the beginning of the 20th century, Chicago's--and perhaps the world's--most famous bordello was the ritzy Everleigh Club owned and operated by sisters Minna and Ada Everleigh. No back-alley cathouse, the club featured buffets of squab and pheasant, a solid-gold piano worth 15 grand, and an in-house laundry so clients' suits could be ironed while they cavorted upstairs with the "courtesans." Frequented by the rich and famous, including clothing tycoon Marshall Field and boxer Jack Johnson, the Everleigh Club became one of the symbolic targets of the forces arrayed against the spread of vice, and in 1911 the brothel closed its doors, leaving behind scores of stories and legends.
