To call Klaus Nomi's take on new wave "operatic" is a bit of an understatement, as the German-born cult figure of the 1980s disco underground was a true, classically trained opera tenor. Dressed in futuristic garb and wearing white face paint, Nomi looked as odd as he sounded; however, his soaring synth-heavy reworkings of pop classics ("I Can't Help Falling in Love With You," "You Don't Own Me," "Just One Look," among others) and daring originals appealed to a surprisingly broad audience. Sadly, Nomi's legacy is linked as much to his status as one the very first pop music figures to die of AIDS as it is to his music. The 2004 documentary THE NOMI SONG paid loving tribute to this singular artist.
