More people today probably know Silk Stockings from Rouben Mamoulian's film adaptation, starring Cyd Charisse and Fred Astaire, than from its stage incarnation. But it was Cole Porter's last show, and enjoyed a respectable run (478 performances), not in the league with Kiss Me, Kate's 1000-plus performances (and it was never produced in England, unlike Kate) but still formidable at the time. Adapted from the Ernst Lubitsch film Ninotchka, starring Greta Garbo, about a Soviet official who is tempted by the romantic and capitalistic aspects of Parisian life, it seemed tailor-made as a satirical subject in the midst of the Cold War, but was perhaps too close to home for some audiences, given the tensions in the world. Hildegarde Neff inhabits the Greta Garbo role, while Don Ameche plays Melvyn Douglas' film part. It isn't one of the great Porter scores, but with lyrics like "Siberia" and "It's a Chemical Reaction, That's All," it is full of Porter's typical wit. "All of You" possesses a full course of his most beguilingly sensual lyrical sensibilities at their most elegant, while "Stereophonic Sound" offers the full measure of Porter's wry, acid-tipped satirical nature. The CD transfer is clean and bright, and nicely annotated, though there are no bonus tracks. ~ William Ruhlmann & Bruce Eder

Every year on New Year's Day, another crop of recordings enters the public domain in Europe, where copyright extends for only 50 years, and labels like the U.K.'s Prism Leisure lose no time in getting out their own unlicensed versions of successful albums. January 1, 2006, freed up the recordings of 1955, among them the original Broadway cast album of Silk Stockings, the stage musical adaptation of the Greta Garbo movie Ninotchka with songs by Cole Porter, which concerns a Soviet official who falls in love in Paris. Prism Leisure's version of the album repeats the material from the RCA Victor Records release (still claimed for copyright in the U.S.) in reasonable sound quality. In the past, the reissue label has added to the value of its gray market releases by including useful bonus tracks, but this time only one is featured, Sammy Davis, Jr.'s cover of the show's best-known song, "All of You." ~ William Ruhlmann
