Review

Rolling Stone (p.57) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "SHIPS turns the usual joyous cacophony up a notch, bringing together a busload of collaborators who fill out his cartoon-voiced Jesus-powered vision with oboes recorders, electric guitars and lots of hand claps."
Entertainment Weekly (p.80) - "Smith still finds something oddly charming in his sprawling chiaroscuro of sound, and a sort of childlike joy in its execution." -- Grade: B
Mojo (Publisher) (p.110) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Led by the vein-popping, pig-squealing vocals of Daniel Smith, Danielson's large folk orchestra parades through SHIPS like worker drones frenetically servicing a queen bee....[The] music holds a refreshingly naive charm."

Title Note

Danielson: Andrew Danielson, Daniel Smith, Lenny Smith.

Additional personnel: Freddy Danielson.

Recording information: Fishtown, Pennsylvania (2006).

In addition to employing imaginative instrumentation, stratospheric vocals, and more varying band names than George Clinton, Danielson's singer, songwriter and chief helmsman Daniel Smith uses some of the best song names to be found in indie rock. On SHIPS, the first of a projected series of albums where the Danielson collective is joined by fellow travelers like Deerhoof and Sufjan Stevens, titles like "Ship the Majestic Suffix" and "Did I Step on Your Trumpet" are surpassed only by "He Who Flattened Your Flame Is Getting Torched." The adjective "quirky" was invented for this band; its singular arrangements and childlike lyrics follow their own impeccably weird logic.
