From the 1960s through the early '80s, Captain Beeheart (Don Van Vliet) fused free jazz, the avant-garde, blues, and rock in a highly original, unclassifiable style. He's had few peers, but his angular, uncompromising sound has influenced countless younger artists, from Robyn Hitchcock to Tom Waits. Beefheart started out in a relatively straight ahead bluesy rock mode, but his music (courtesy of the Magic Band) grew progressively stranger and more complex with each album, culminating in his masterpiece, 1969's TROUT MASK REPLICA. After 1982's ICE CREAM FOR CROW, the ever-inscrutable Captain retired from music, concentrating instead on his painting.
