Issued in 2007, SHINE draws the finest tracks from David Gray's first three albums--A CENTURY ENDS (1993), FLESH ('94), and SELL, SELL, SELL ('96). The result is an excellent non-chronological overview of the British singer-songwriter's formative era, before he found a fuller sound and a wider audience with WHITE LADDER. Highlights of the collection include the plaintive title song, the dreamy "Coming Down," and the fiery "Faster, Sooner, Now," which all call attention to Gray's bold, emotive voice and thoughtful lyrics. Edging out Gray's EP compilation (a shorter set that covers similar ground), SHINE serves as one of the best introductions to the earnest U.K. performer, second only to WHITE LADDER itself.
