Cameo Artist Snapshot:

This New York funk group, led by drummer/singer Larry Blackmon, began recording in the mid-1970s, but didn't reach its peak of popularity until the 1986 hit "Word Up," which defined Cameo's angular, synth-laced sound. Blackmon's outrageous stage persona and the group's simple hooks were key elements to the band's success.

Title Note

Cameo: Charlie Singleton (vocals, guitar, synthesizer, percussion); Larry Blackmon (vocals, bass guitar, drums, percussion); Tomi Jenkins (vocals); Nathan Leftenant (background vocals).

Recording information: Chesire Sound, Atlanta, Georgia (1984).

1984's SHE'S STRANGE is a pivotal album in Cameo's history, the fulcrum between the sleek electronics of 1986's WORD UP and the horn-powered George Clinton-style funk of the band's earlier records. The hit title track, the minimalist ballad "Love You Anyway," and the hip-hop-influenced "Talkin' Out the Side of Your Neck" point toward the future. But after that opening barrage, the rest of the album reverts to a more familiar direction, culminating in the dramatic, soulful "Hangin' Downtown," one of Cameo's most powerful ballads, and the Rick James-like punk-funk of "Le Ve Toi." Surprisingly, the new influences mesh well with the older Cameo sound, making SHE'S STRANGE much less uneven and dated-sounding than many R&B albums of this post-Prince era.
