Picture a country presided over by Santo & Johnny (of "Sleepwalk" fame), where only Sergio Leone westerns are shown. That would be the environment from which a combo such as Friends of Dean Martinez might spring. Originally named Friends of Dean Martin, the band was forced by legal action to add an "ez" to disabuse any conceivable connection to the deceased Rat Packer.

The Friends' all-instrumental repertoire features heartbreakingly smooth voicings of steel guitar, assorted vibes, marimba, and violin, along with a guitar, bass, and drums core. Steel guitarist Bill Elm (formerly of Naked Prey) and Joey Burns (also a member of Giant Sand) are the primary authors of the Friends' original numbers. Though they draw from the same stock as other bands in the loungecore/"Cocktail Nation" movement, theirs is a much edgier and darker concoction-windswept and dry like a scene out of HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER.
