Review

Down Beat (p.82) - 4.5 stars out of 5 -- "[With a] youthful up-all-night sense of discovery and sheer joy..."

Title Note

The Microscopic Septet: John Zorn (saxophone); Phillip Johnston (soprano saxophone); Don Davis (alto saxophone); Danny Nigro, Paul Shapiro, John Hagen (tenor saxophone); Dave Sewelson (baritone saxophone); David Hofstra (tuba, bass instrument); Joel Forrester (piano); Richard Dworkin (drums).

Part of the same downtown avant-garde scene that produced John Zorn and his ilk, the Microscopic Septet employed traditional jazz instrumentation in the service of a whole blender full of mismatched genres--funk, noise-rock, bop--the results of which captivated New York audiences for over 10 years at the end of the 20th century. This lovingly packaged set contains their first two albums, remastered and sounding surprisingly fresh, as well as liner notes by the band's soprano sax player (and leader) Phillip Johnston, and new cover art by Art Spiegelman.
