Review

Rolling Stone (3/7/96, p.48) - 4 Stars (out of 5) - "...TWILIGHT is, in its shotgun way, strong, convincing Reed: prickly, confessional, poisonously funny, unabashedly romantic. And it gets under your skin in a cumulative way..."
Entertainment Weekly (2/23-3/1/96, pp.120-123) - "...As if to equate emotional directness with musical austerity, Reed sets most of TWILIGHT's tunes to skeletal arrangements, often just guitar, bass, and drums. The songs are, by Reed standards, a surprisingly tuneful bunch..." - Rating: B+
Q (3/96, p.99) - 4 Stars (out of 5) - "...this album has a stripped down intimacy....There's still mischievousness in that wily old heart..."
Alternative Press (5/96, p.88) - 5 (out of 5) - "...A fresh breath of inspiration blows the album along..."
Musician (4/96, p.85) - "...earnest, song-based feel...rock's original tough guy even admits to shockingly human emotions like vulnerability, jealousy and need..."
NME (Magazine) (2/17/96, p.48) - 8 (out of 10) - "...begins and ends with the comforting burble of feedback, and in between there is Guitar....nothing is safe as the rejuvenated Reed gleefully loots rock's candy store to satisfy his newly rediscovered sweet tooth..."

Title Note

Parran, Russell Gunn, Jr. (horns); Roy Bittan (piano); Tony "Thunder" Smith (drums, background vocals); Mino Cinelu (percussion); Struan Oglanby (programming); Laurie Anderson (background vocals).

Recorded at The Roof, New York, New York.

SET THE TWILIGHT REELING was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Recording Package.

Lou Reed's SET THE TWILIGHT REELING casts aside the gloomfest of his death-and-reflection trilogy to reexamine life under the glow of love; as he tells the listener in "Trade In," Reed wants a "14th chance at this life."

That Lou--he's been around. Maybe that's why TWILIGHT's 11 surprisingly poppy and sweet songs are so refreshing. It's a side of Lou that most haven't seen since he made his tender side known on TRANSFORMER's "Andy's Chest." Opening with the nostalgic bliss of "Egg Cream" and moving into the love-struck giddiness of "Hooky Wooky," SET THE TWILIGHT REELING seems like a peek at a new man. He even sounds different. The guitar tones are dreamier--"The Proposition" lifts some of old sideman Robert Quine's best melodic tricks and the title track boasts Hendrix-ian guitar strokes. Still more enticing, it sounds like Lou, every note.
