While Christian heavy metal has come a long way since Stryper, few could have predicted the extremities some worshipful acts would go to in the 21st century. California's Impending Doom are certainly one of the most extreme, using the gore-obsessed death metal sound of bands like Cannibal Corpse to create songs about faith and devotion. Their second album, THE SERPENT SERVANT, is pure deathcore, alternating rushing blast beats with crippling hardcore breakdowns and served up with fetid tomb-zombie vocals. Whether you go for good or evil, there's no denying the brute force of songs like "In the House of Mourning."
