Title Note

One of several George Shearing compilations bearing the title September in the Rain, this excellent offering from Giants of Jazz contains 22 marvelous tracks recorded between February 8 and December 12, 1949 by the George Shearing Quintet, a tightly knit little band featuring vibraphonist Marjorie Hyams, guitarist Chuck Wayne, bassist John Levy and drummer Denzil Best. Weaned on stride, swing and boogie-woogie, by 1949 Shearing was completely immersed in the burgeoning bop-to-cool movement that played such a prominent role in early modern jazz. These historical performances were previously released on the Discovery, Savoy and MGM labels. Note that the ethereal "Midnight in the Air" was also issued as "Midnight on Cloud 69." On "Cherokee," "Four Bars Short" and "Good to the Last Bop," Hyams covers the piano while Shearing shows off his almost alarming dexterity as a bop accordionist. ~ arwulf arwulf
