New York's Longwave made their name coming out of the same scene that sparked the successes of the Strokes and Interpol, but because their music didn't fit into as easy a retro-mold, they never scored the same level of popularity. This album, their fourth, further showcases what they do offer--a bright, shoegazey sound, remarkable chops, and a consistent facility with strong melodies. Shannon Ferguson's coiled, hollowed-out bass sound gives the songs some grounding, on which they layer slashing, spectral guitars and Steve Schlitz's almost-jaded yet still resilient vocals. On "No Direction" and a few other tracks, Longwave even throw in flashy guitar solos, just because they can.
