Although their Butch Vig-produced major label debut was released in 2007, Gainesville, Florida's Against Me! existed a full 10 years before that, growing from Tom Gabel's solo acoustic joint into a full-fledged, old-school punk band. That trajectory hints at the surprising variety of sounds that the band employs on its records--including acoustic guitars and the occasional horn--as it resists the confines of by-the-numbers punk. Relentless touring and a hearty DIY ethic, rather than label support, helped the band win over legions of fans, who are drawn to Gabel's fiery authenticity and fresh, melodic take on a potentially tired sound.

Against Me! proved to be somewhat of an anomaly on the US hardcore scene in 2005. There's no emo, screamo, or metalcore to be found on SEARCHING FOR A FORMER CLARITY--just straight-up, three-chord grassroots punk that earned the Florida quartet a rabidly devoted following. Whether the band is performing a folk-like acoustic number or a revved-up barnstormer, frontman Tom Gabel's charmingly gruff, off-key singing carries this thoroughly entertaining set of tunes.
