Sean Kingston Artist Snapshot:

Riding a generous sample of Ben E. King's classic "Stand By Me" all the way to the top of the charts, the Jamaica-via-Miami-based singer/rapper Sean Kingston was responsible for the biggest summer jam of 2007 with "Beautiful Girls." The infectious pop nugget was marked by a wonderful air of nostalgia, thanks to the King sample, yet also contained a darker undertone concerning the suicidal effects the love of a woman can have on a young man. "Beautiful Girls" was a hit in numerous countries, and rocketed Kingston (born Kisean Anderson) to international stardom. His second single, "Me Love," used the chorus from the reggae-tinged Led Zeppelin hit "D'yer Mak'er" as source material.

Review

Entertainment Weekly (p.69) - "At its best, Kingston's debut CD keeps turning familiar riffs into dancehall cotton candy." -- Grade: B

Title Note

Personnel: Sean Kingston (vocals); Jonathan "J.R." Rotem (various instruments); Mike Feingold (guitar); Lyrica Anderson (background vocals).

Additional personnel: Paula Deanda, Kardinal Offishall, Vybz Kartel (rap vocals).

The 17-year-old MC known as Sean Kingston got put on the 21st-century way--through his myspace page. On his impressive self-titled debut full-length, Kingston blends elements of contemporary R&B, dancehall reggae, and radio-friendly pop over 14 tracks, all the while flowing with hungry, upstart energy. The stand-out track and debut single, "Beautiful Girls," quickly became the summer jam of 2007, with its infectious beats and clever sampling of Ben E. King's classic "Stand By Me." The rest of the album's thump comes courtesy of West Coast producer J.R., and with a tracklist light on guest stars (Paula DeAnda, Vybz Kartel, and Kardinal Offishal), SEAN KINGSTON heralds the coming of an assured young artist brimming with potential.

4 out of 5 stars A Boy Like Me... Nice Try, February 19, 2008
By Carlo
At first I had mixed feelings about Sean and his debut single BEAUTIFUL GIRLS, then I got the album and I was like: Puff!, lets give him a try... I liked what I heard... I could compare it with a male version of Rihannas A GIRL LIKE ME, since it mixes some Reggae with R&B and fresh rhymes. But theres a problem: his voice. He raps very nice on the Opening song KINGSTON but although he can sing in tune he needs to practice more, more, MORE! Also the I-wanna-speak-with-jamaican-accent doesnt work at all. It has its moments like in ME LOVE but he needs to work it out. The lyrics are pretty decent for a kid his age and thats the strongest point of his album. Top 5 Songs: 1. TAKE YOU THERE 2. THERES NOTHIN 3. BEAUTIFUL GIRLS 4. CHANGE 5. KINGSTON
