Title Note

The Album Leaf: Jimmy Lavalle.

Additional personnel: Nathan Delffs (lap steel guitar, keyboards); Matt Resovich, Maria Huld Markan (violin); Kjartan Sveinsson (piano, Fender Rhodes piano, glockenspiel); Luis Hermosillo (bass instrument); Timothy Reece, Orri Pall Dyrason (drums).

The Album Leaf is the brainchild of Jimmy LaValle, whose music is a curious mixture of moody keyboard and guitar motifs and stark electronic effects. This combination yields an atmospheric patois that is both exotic and strangely familiar.

A collection of brooding instrumental works, SEAL BEACH represents an introspective journey for LaValle. The opening track, "Malmo," blends swirling record-player needle noise with a mechanistic backbeat and a repeating keyboard riff (played on a Fender Rhodes). The less melancholic title track also prominently features the Rhodes. This time, LaValle's use of bell tones makes the Rhodes sound more like a celesta, drenched in vibrato. Other tracks such as "One Minute" and "Last Time Here" change character altogether as a folksy acoustic guitar takes over. Even on these pieces, LaValle uses ambient effects to maintain a large, open sound. The use of violin, drums, and other percussion adds further color to many of these tracks. Despite the contributions of several guest musicians, SEAL BEACH is really an intimate one-man show.
