Boredoms Artist Snapshot:

Japanese experimental band Boredoms plays a spastic, utterly bizarre combination of free jazz, hardcore punk, experimental noise, and electronic music. One of the most challenging groups in music history, Boredoms briefly tasted the mainstream during the mid-'90s after being championed by bands like the Beastie Boys and Sonic Youth. Though later recordings saw a drift toward a more tribal/trance groove, Boredoms still sound like no other band on the planet.

Review

Magnet (p.87) - "[I]t's well-played and well-mixed..."

Title Note

Boredoms: Yamantaka Eye.

Recording information: 2005.

"Accessible" is not a word one usually associates with Japanese noise-rock mavens the Boredoms. And since the band's 2005 release SEADRUM/HOUSE OF SUN is comprised of two lengthy, sprawling jams that lack any semblance of conventional song structure, lyrics, or melody, this album is by no means a bid for commercial viability. Still, compared to the nerve-scraping, whiplash-inducing hardcore of much Boredoms material, SEADRUM/HOUSE OF SUN is the equivalent to floating in a warm, strange tropical bay.

"Seadrum" rises up from a combination of Meredith Monk-style vocalizations, Krautrock space jams, African drumming, and Sun Ra-inspired free jazz--a rhythmic pulse that increases in intensity over the song's 23-plus minutes. "House of Sun," alternately, is a hazy, psychedelic swarm with explicit Indian overtones in its motifs and instrumentation (which includes tanpura and sitars), and sounds like Ravi Shankar waking up inside a hive of bees. These descriptions may not initially sound appealing, but the Boredoms' usual flair for the unexpected has been integrated into a remarkable skill for sustaining organic, rhythmic, and melodic improvisations, making this one of their best and most listenable sets.
