Very rarely do the outstanding qualities of a pianist match perfectly the outstanding qualities of the compositions that pianist plays. When that does occur, the resulting performances seem to transform both the performer and the piece performed.

The Romanian pianist Radu Lupu and the piano compositions of Franz Schubert share such a relationship, and nowhere is this more in evidence than in the Impromptus Op. 90 (D. 899) and Op. 142 (D. 935) that constitute this re-release of the 1982 recording. Lupu has long been a champion of this composer's works, and one need only listen to the Impromptu in G flat major one of the loveliest compositions in the piano literature to be won over to his cause. He spins out its otherworldly melody with a delicacy of touch and attention to tone that have no parallel in the many recordings of this piece.
