Title Note

Benjamin Britten was in many ways the heart and soul of English music in his lifetime and, while his fame rests primarily on his merits as a composer, nowhere is the warmth of his personality more evident than in his performing collaborations and friendships with other great artists. Upon their meeting in 1960, Mstislav Rostropovich became one of those friends, leading Britten to write several works for him as well as become his frequent partner in performing the works of other composers.

Schubert's sweetly modest 'Arpeggione' Sonata was originally written for a fretted, six-stringed cello-like instrument and offers a technical challenge for cellists. Rostropovich and Britten treat it with great affection, producing consistently beautiful tones at relaxed tempos. The Debussy Sonata has the concise strangeness of his late music and it is perfectly captured in an agile, clear-eyed performance. Similarly quirky but much less frequently heard are the 'Five Pieces in Folk Style' by Robert Schumann, engaging miniatures that seem quite substantial enough in these thoughtful performances.
