Though the basis of this quasi-movement -- loping and occasionally stomping rhythms that have more in common with T. Rex and Slade than the traditional 4/4 dance groove (see J�rgen Paape's "Ballroom Blitz," sadly not included here, for undeniable ties) -- has been present in the Cologne camp for several years, it didn't begin making strides toward pop until the early 2000s. The fact that a good percentage of shuffle-tech tracks that were coming out around the time of this sequel were more accessible and less abrasive -- and even song-based on occasion -- is evident here, all the while showing off just how adaptable the rough template can be. As with most Kompakt compilations, a good portion of the tracks are lifted from recent 12" releases from the label, its affiliates, and its peer imprints, while the remainder was previously unreleased. T. Raumschmiere's remix of Komeit's "3 Hours" casts the original dream pop tune in a bounding rhythm and slight rippling effects, neither of which override the soft female vocals. International Pony's "Leaving Home" gets a facelift from Losoul, which turns the original into a track that playfully vacillates between idyllic sophisti-pop and euphoric buzzsaw funk. Up-and-comer Mikkel Metal -- who also had four excellent 12"s out on Echocord by the time this came out -- ably carries the torch for Basic Channel with hazy shuffler "Hemper," which features a wonderfully snaky bassline and silty BC-like surface noise. Other bright moments from the Orb, Wassermann, and ScSi-9 (replete with a Big Thing/crap-era Duran Duran sample!) help catapult Schaffelfieber 2 far above the original compilation. ~ Andy Kellman If You Enjoy "Schaffelfieber 2 (Import) (CD)", May We Also Recommend:
