Tribute albums featuring a variety of rock bands covering the work of a famous artist are getting regular as bread, so the prospect of a Pink Floyd tribute may induce shudders at the specter of predictability. Happily, 1995's A SAUCERFUL OF PINK is anything but predictable. For starters, the songs featured here are from the band's pre-DARK SIDE OF THE MOON career, sidestepping the more mainstream Floyd. Secondly, and even better, the bands that cover the tunes are all of an alternative stripe, with Psychic TV, Alien Sex Fiend, Sky Cries Mary, and Eden, among others, giving highly individual, creative interpretations of early Floyd classics. The result is a true tribute: one that testifies to the spirit and inspiration of Pink Floyd, rather than just going through the motions.
